Whitesand First Nation
Ontario Power Generation Hydro Dam/Flooding Settlement
The OPG Settlement Agreement
Settled: 2009 | Status: Completed |
---|
Whitesand launched a claim against the Governments of Ontario and Canada and Ontario Hydro for their construction and operation of Ontario Power Generation (“OPG”) facilities in the Lake Nipigon watershed. Whitesand alleged that the construction and operation of these facilities caused flooding in various Whitesand communities and as a result directly caused harm to our way of life and left long-lasting impacts.
This claim was settled and important terms included the:
- shoreline stabilization of Old Whitesand;
- land transfer to Whitesand from Ontario of the communities of Old Whitesand, Mud River, and Ferland. The Government of Ontario will also support Whitesand in discussions with Canada on making those lands official Reserves; and,
- compensation and development of a Community Trust.
