Administration

First Nation band administration refers to the governance and management of a First Nation's affairs, including its lands, resources, and community programs, as defined under the Indian Act and increasingly through self-government agreements. It involves a council, typically composed of a chief and councillors, elected by band members, who are responsible for making decisions and overseeing the band's operations.

 

1. Key Functions:

  • Governance and Administration
    • Responsible for the overall governance and administration of the First Nation's affairs, including land management, resource management, and community services. 
  • Community Programs and Services
    • Oversee the delivery of essential services such as education, housing, water and sewer, roads, and other community programs. 
  • Membership
    • Band councils are involved in managing band membership and developing membership rules.
  • Finances
    • Manage the band's finances and ensure proper financial oversight.
  • Self-Government
    • Increasingly, First Nations are pursuing self-government agreements, which allow them to take greater control over their governance and administration. 

 

2. Band Administration:

  • Band Administrator
    • A band administrator is often appointed to manage the day-to-day operations of the band administration, working with various departments and overseeing staff. 
  • Departments
    • Band administrations typically have multiple departments, such as finance, public works, health, child and family services, social services, and education.
  • Accountability
    • Band administrators and councils are accountable to the band members for their decisions and actions.
