Whitesand First Nation
Treaty Reserve Claim Settlement
Whitesand's specific claim regarding its Treaty Land Entitlement
Settled: 2001 | Status: Continuing |
---|
Whitesand launched a specific claim alleging failure by the Crown to set aside reserve land for Whitesand in a timely way after the Robinson Superior Treaty of 1850 was agreed to, and as a result of that failure, Whitesand lost the opportunities that came with that land.
In 2024, Canada agreed to settle the federal portion of the claim for loss of use and enjoyment for a sum of money and other promises of support.
Whitesand decided that approximately half of the money received from Canada will be allocated for per capita payments, representing $50,000 per Whitesand band member alive on September 13, 2024. Whitesand also set aside a quarter of the total amount for community development and another quarter for investments.
The Settlement with Canada does not stop the claim against Ontario from proceeding. Indeed, the provincial portion carries on.
